Of the estimated 10.8 million new displacements worldwide in the first half of 2019, a record 7 million were due to natural disasters, nearly twice the total caused by conflict and violence during the same period. The displacements were driven by a record 950 disaster events, with the top 5 events displacing approximately 5.2 million alone (see map). In the last decade (2008-2018), natural disasters have caused on average over $144 billion in estimated damage per year (see graph).
